Matt Zaffino is Wrong

This was actually supposed to be a book.

My daughter, Molly, loves the weather page in the Oregonian. It is very colorful, has a fancy picture of the Portland skyline with the seven day forecast illustrated. She likes to read me the highs and the lows. Plastered in the upper right hand corner of the page is a picture of Matt Zaffino. He has his big smiling mug telling everyone that he knows the weather. There is usually some little factoid that he posts about the weather this time of year.

Molly noticed that some days they would say it was going to be partly sunny and other days it was going to be partly cloudy, but they used the same picture. She wondered why that was. My wife helped her send an e-mail to the Oregonian weather department. Matt Zaffino never wrote her back. We assumed that it was because Matt Zaffino didn't know.

Molly started noticing that Matt Zaffino didn't really know what he was talking about. The weather page would say it was going to be sunny and she would look outside at the rain. Matt Zaffino would say it was going to be mostly cloudy and really there was more blue sky than clouds. She put it blunt one day... Matt Zaffino is wrong.

We started noticing it more and more how wrong this guy was. And his little weather message was so smug and all-knowing. Is this guy oblivious or what? Molly asked me one day how Matt Zaffino knew what the weather was going to be. I told her about sattelite pictures and that sort of thing. She said he probably just looks it up on the internet. Molly's probably right.

After about a week of incorrect forecasts, Molly told me that we should write a book. The book would be called Matt Zaffino is Wrong. It costs money and you have to know people to get a book published. Blogs are a lot easier to get going. Here's our message to the world.

Matt Zaffino is wrong.

  1. I totally agree with your blog. Here is some advice. When my kids were Molly's age I had them watch Joseph Galbreth in Eugene. He was always right and they had access to him. He even came to their school in Reedsport and gave weather forecasts. He was always right. So tell Molly to tune in to channel 9 in Eugene and watch Joseph. And tell her not to root for the ducks because Joseph is sneaky and may try and get her to do that. I bet you won't hear from Matt Zafino but I know you would from Joseph. If you don't get channel 9 then listen to Dave Zalesky in the morning. He is even a beaver fan.

  2. Molly..you are the coolest five year old I know. Matt Zaffino should have Molly's forecast on his weather show and on the weather page. She just looks out the window and does a better job!

  3. I also meant to say that I think I heard Matt Zafino the other day saying he was a better weatherman than Al Roker. Wonder what Al would say if he knew Matt had said that?? That would be like Joey 5pix saying he was a better quarterback than Derek Andersen. And we all know the answer to that one.

  4. I can't believe I let my husband and daughter share a blog. This can't be a good idea for Molly's upbringing.

  5. Molly needs to learn these things in life. Some lessons are hard but need to be learned. I am watching Al Roker right now in Portland. I am sure his forecast for the area will hold up well.

  6. Al Roker's head is no where near as big as BMs head (Big Matt). I have been logging Matt's forecast. 28% is not good. Well maybe if you were shooting baskets from half court but come on Matt. I will keep logging it and hope for improvement. But I won't get my hopes up. Grandpa Stan.

  7. This guy used to receive awards. Not so in the last ten years. Now he relies on the promos that KGW does to hype his image. "Most professional Chief Meteorologiist" complete with music under the very serious sounding announcer. Sounds impressive until......he stands in front of the Green Screen and informs us on the pending wind Storm telling us the gusts might reach of 50 MILE 'N HOUR.... Never mind the fact that we are all looking at the 50 Mile PER Hour Graphic, here is the "Most Professional, Chief, 1985 winner of the seal of approval, proclaiming the wind speed of MAH not MPH Time and Time again !! Bet thats the way they still do it in Medford, But Portland is almost a major market. Maybe Ten years ago folks didn't pay much attention to the way a "Professional" reported his forecast. Matt TRY to say Miles Per Hour...it just might break your Ten year dry spell for Awards.

  8. I've noticed that too. Small market TV

  9. KGW's "Cheap Meteorologist" Gives the Gay foot signal with the toe of his shoe after almost every forecast.

  10. Where Did this guy go to school? He keeps saying "We Got." The way he stares at the camera after his "Forecast" is just plain creepy. And yet KGW keeps promoting him. The other forecasters do a much better job.

  11. Now... do research on Dave Salesky, Rod Hill and all the other weathermen and your article will be unbiased.

  12. That Mark Nelsen guy on FOX12 is even worse. A severe warm bias

    1. It would be great if channel 12 would replace Peter ferry man with Mark Nelson. I haven't seen Mark exhibit any political bias. In my opinion Peter ferry man is full of it .

  13. Matt does not even know the shape of the Earth. Watch some flat earth vids and NASA lies vids. There are no satellites. Matt puts out disinfo whenever he mentions "satellites".

  14. Phil Volker is the best weatherman Portland has ever seen. I don't know why they let him go. I believe he was on channel 6. I'm sure belching Rod has his own story.
